Slash Guest Author Rec - Evieeden

evieeden recommends In Public, I Call Her Sister by naelany

One of my favourite things to read in this fandom is femmeslash and unfortunately good femmeslash is often in short supply, which was why I was especially excited to be able to read In Public, I Call Her Sister by naelany. This period story is the tale of what would have happened if Rosalie and Vera weren’t just good friends, but in love as well, and the consequences of that relationship given that homosexuality wasn’t accepted in the 1930s. This one twist in character then changes our perceptions of everything in Rosalie’s history.

Tuesday's Best 1-4-2011

Good morning, my lovelies. Hope you had a good start to the new year. As always, we're here to help make your Tuesdays a little hotter, a little sweeter (and yes, at times also a little sadder, but such is life). Today, however, I think it's safe to say it'll be a little sweeter, so grab a blanket to snuggle under, and let's check out what Aradi and Stolenxsanity have found for you today.

~*~*~*~*~*~

Good drabble fics are like crack.

Just a little taste, to get you hooked.

Just a little more, to keep you.

Just a string of cliffies to make you twitch helplessly.

Just a little progress, to make you scream “OMFG just give me the next line.  Just one more line!”

Just an author (or two) who are evil, evil pushers.  (Yes, I’m looking at you SorceressCirce and Naelany.)

I complain, but I love them so much.  (The drabbles, not necessarily the evil, evil authors.)  A frequent fix.  A quick read.  What’s not to love?

(twitchtwitch)

My latest drabbly love was Beyond the Gaze of a Boy by Whitlock-Masen (as part of Fandom Gives Back).  It’s Edward & Jasper and is high-school sweet.

Squeals and laughter fill the backyard, but our little corner is silent. "Look," she says finally, "I think you're being ridiculous. He's been watching you all afternoon."

My frown deepens as I mumble at my hands, "Yeah, because I keep fucking staring at him."

I can feel my cheeks burning, but the heat is nothing next to Bella's hand on my knee. I look up to find her deep brown eyes focused on mine. "You're wrong," she says simply. When I don't speak, she adds, "Can't hurt to try, right?"

(It really can’t!)

Drabble stories like this are perfect for a daily fix, but since this one is complete you can read it all at once for a quick burst of fluffy joy.  I love all the Whitlock-Masen stories (and Naelany’s stories, and SorceressCirce’s stories), but this one was especially nice to fight off the winter drearies (Edward and Jasper around a pool.. mmm...).  When you read it, leave your love for Whitlock-Masen, and the generous participants in FGB who have brought us all so much good reading.

I’ll leave you with one last hit, because I’m nice like that.

"Is there anyone you want?" he whispers.

It seems only fitting that before I go into this weeks lovely rec that I wish all you wonderful, and loyal, readers a very Happy New Year. I can’t believe that it’s 2011 already. Last year seemed to disappear in the blink of an eye, almost literally. I hope that, so far, the new year has been a good one for everyone of you out there, and that it continues to be amazing.

Now, on to my rec for this week: An amazingly fluffy-sweet Edward/Jasper one-shot, 12 Days, written by the lovely and extremely talented, naelany. I chose this story as my rec before I knew what today’s other rec would be. I must say, though, it’s rather fitting.

As for the story? While I’ve said this before, it still holds true - and likely always will - when talking about a story penned by naelany. The introduction of the main characters, as well as the plot, is flawless. You’re not sitting around trying to figure out what’s going on, or who’s dating who. In the way that I’ve come to expect, while everything isn’t laid out in a bland, “telling” way, it’s not obscured behind vague or metaphorical references either. It just is. And what it is, as far as I’m concerned, is perfect.

Everything but the angel was already in its place. I sat down heavily on the dining room chair, staring at the beautiful red and gold angel. She'd been in Jasper's family for years, though you'd never be able to tell with how well kept she was. He had inherited her when his gran had passed away four years ago. Unlike angels you could get nowadays, this one had a porcelain head, and hands.

It was always Jasper who'd place her carefully on the top of the tree, but he wouldn't be here until Christmas Day this year. His work had sent him to Burlington, Vermont, where they'd opened a new office. He and eight others had been temporarily relocated there to help set everything up, and assure that the new management had everything under control before coming back to their regular jobs here in Seattle.

Alice came to stand behind me and wrapped her arms around my neck, resting her chin lightly on the top of my head. I placed my hand on her arms where they crossed, and sighed. "I miss him, Ali..."

I know, I know … bad place to leave you hanging but, trust me, there is no heart fail here.

The story continues with Edward at home, and given a task. A task that confuses him, but helps him to get through the long days ahead.

We sat and talked for another half an hour, and he hinted again at there being a surprise on Christmas Day that I had to figure out from the clues he'd be sending me. I was dying of curiosity, and tried several times to get him to give it up, but he wouldn't have it.

"Darlin', you best be putting your energy to use figuring this thing out, or you might not get it at all," he threatened. "And there's not a chance in hell you'll weasel it out of me...or anyone else!"

That made me pause. Anyone else? Who, besides Alice, was involved with this little scheme of his?

Almost as if realizing he'd said too much, he said, "Ah, never you mind. Point is, you need to do this on your own, sweetheart."

A task that, even though he tries desperately to figure out what the answer to this task is, he doesn’t quite get it. At least not initially, and not without a little bit of obvious prompting.

Oh, Edward, I adore you still even if you are a little slow on the uptake.

He combed his fingers tenderly through my hair, and sighed softly. "God, I love you, Edward. Thank you."

Wiping my eyes, I cleared my throat and said, "I love you, too, Jazz. So much."

I know, out of context, the above doesn’t make much sense but, just trust me. It’s the perfect just-about-at-the-end to a lovely story. On that note, while I also love the fuckhot smut scenes that naelany is more than capable of writing, even without that aspect, this story was perfect. In fact, I’d even go so far as to say that it was made all the better because of the absence of it. Crazy, right?

Even still, this story is wonderful. It’s the perfect anecdote to all the angsty and heart faily stories that are out there. It’s like a breath of fresh air and a bright ray of sunshine. My suggestion to you? Drop everything and give it a shot.

Tuesday's Best 12-14-2010

Good morning, my lovelies. Hope today finds you in good health and even better spirits. It seems like the Captain and Aradi've been busy... Let's see what they've got for you this week, shall we? Don't forget to grab a towel and a change of panties before you go ;-)

~*~*~*~*~*~

Is it strange that I joke far too much yet love to read the angstyfail stories?

Probably.  Whatever.

Someone out there has to be like me.  We can suffer together, fanning each other and sharing the box of tissues, soothing our woe with a little unf.

Today’s example of “dark and slash and dank” (the author’s words) is Incarcerated by Goldenmeadow.  This is a short Edward/Jasper ficlet in Goldenmeadow’s distinctive style.  The cherry on top of my dark/slash sundae is that it is AU.  The story begins with the arrival of Alice and Jasper, and Edward’s immediate attraction to half of the couple.

Learning, quickly, that Jasper could sense and warp the sentiments of others, I was bound and gagged and gagging by the idea that he had known straight away of my lust for him. Stripped down to a pyre of pure need, my keen, keening, corrupt want was plain to him.

Never disgracing me, never shaming me, not once causing me to feel foolish for my misplaced affections, Jasper was humble. The picture of a gentleman that shouldered a world of sensation capable of felling a lesser man.

But I didn't know what he was really thinking.

I wanted to be inside him, be inside of him. Be.

I had no idea what he was thinking.

This is what I mean by Goldenmeadow’s style.  It’s like reading poetry, which I usually hate.  (Perhaps I’d like poetry more if it contained more slash?  Hmm.)  This isn’t the kind of story you skim just to get to the happy fun times.  That will only make you trip over the wordplay.

So Edward wants Jasper.  Alice has Jasper.  The Volturi want... what the Volturi always want.  I won’t spoil endings, but this story comes with clear warnings not to expect a fluffstorm.  I loveloveloved the ending, which should be warning enough in itself.

Incarcerated is long-completed and only four chapters.  Curl up with an angst-loving friend, an adult beverage, and a thesaurus and try it for yourself.

*eyes Nae* Don’t give me that look, Missy. I am sorry but it had to be done, now sit still and let me shower you with praises.

Hello my slashtastics...I bet you are wondering what crazy juice Captain Jezebel  has been drinking ( rum....the Cap’n always drinks rum ). Anyway that is besides the point; I know you guys just want to know why Nae is giving me the evil eye; the answer...two descriptive words that when put together evoke such delicious sexiness. I am of course talking about Red Velvet, Naelany's gift drabbles for Ahizelm’s birthday, and what a lucky birthday girl you are, Ang.

Red like fire, hot, fuck that...smoking hot, that is the heat at which these drabbles burn. Seriously they are enough to make you fan yourself throughout, and perhaps need some water. Fast paced and extremely sexy.

Velvety smooth, the connection between her Edward and Jasper, perfectly effortless. Nae has the knack for bringing us a pair of boys that we can definitely see the bond between. No matter how long or short of time they know one another.

Put them together and you have Red Velvet, which happens to be Edward’s radio DJ handle to compliment the rhythmic, sensual tones in his voice that earn him a following of lustful fans. Unfortunately for Edward most of his fans have been of the female persuasion, which isn’t exactly his flavor. This is until Jasper drops by the studio to visit his buddy Emmett, and also hoping to meet the DJ that keeps him up all night.

Reluctantly letting go of his hand, I smirk, automatically using my radio voice. "The pleasure's mine, I'm sure."

My grin widens in satisfaction as Jasper bites his lip, shifting slightly, a faint blush on his cheeks.

I wouldn't mind him throwing himself at me. Jesus...

Emmett puts a hand on each of our shoulders, eyeing us wickedly - knowingly. "So I was supposed to show Jazz around the station, but I think that job'll suit you better, Red. Whaddaya say?"

Hell. Fuck. Yes. I'll show him around, alright.

"I think that could be arranged."

My eyes linger on Jazz's eager gaze.

Does Edward give Jasper a tour of the studio and more? Does the tour involve a lap dance and scented body oils? Are piercings involved? Or do they perhaps get to know each other over bologna sandwiches? *shrugs* there is only one way to find out....read the drabbles dang it. I can guarantee you will love Radioward and his #1 fan, Jasper. If that isn’t enough to get you reading ‘Zipper’, ‘Gasp’ and ‘Succulent’ are just three of the yummy prompts she uses in this set of drabbles.

So give em a looksee and leave Nae some lovin if you to...*eyes Nae again*. Good girl...you sat still and took those complimentary words like a champ. *winks, and kisses cheek*

There you have it, folks. I  will admit that it's a little strange to know that these wonderful ladies had a round of fisticuffs over lil' ol' me, and I want to thank them for being so sweet.
Be sure to leave some love, and check back next week to see what Stolenxsanity and I have in store for you.

Suicide.  Lives lost far too soon.   Left with no hope and the thought that there was only one thing left they could do.  Because they were bullied physically and mentally.  Because of who they were or who they loved or who they were believed to be.

The first article in this series addressed the Matthew Shepard foundation  and its efforts to rid the world of the cruel hate crime violence that resulted in injury and death.  But sometimes the cruelty damages the part of a person that we can’t see.  It takes away their will to live.

The leading support in this area is The Trevor Project:  (from Wikipedia) The Trevor Project is an American non-profit organization that operates the only nationwide, around-the-clock crisis and suicide prevention helpline for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth.  The Trevor Project was founded by James Lecesne, Peggy Rajski and Randy Stone. They are the creators of the 1994 Academy Award-winning short film, Trevor, a dramedy about a gay 13-year-old boy who, when rejected by friends because of his sexuality, makes an attempt to take his life. When Trevor was scheduled to air on HBO in 1998, the filmmakers realized that some of the program's young viewers might be facing the same kind of crisis as Trevor, and began to search for a support line to be broadcast during the airing. They discovered that no such helpline existed, and decided to dedicate themselves to forming what was, in their view, a much-needed resource: an organization to promote acceptance of LGBTQ youth, and to aid in crisis and suicide prevention among that group.

Daniel Radcliff explains the Trevor Project

and he provides some behind the scenes and interview footage:

The Trevor Project website:

The Trevor Helpline:   866.4.U.TREVOR or 866.488.7386.

Last week the Trevor Project had so many hits, the website kept crashing.   They need donations to do the work they do.  You can donate at their website, and you can even Text: TREVOR to 85944 and donate $5 to The Trevor Project!

Recently columnist Dan Savage and his partner started the “It Gets Better” project, and the response has been huge:

Last I checked their YouTube channel “itgetsbetterproject” had over one million views and over 12,500 subscribers and roughly 1000 entries.  The numbers keep growing.   The Advocate rated their top 25 (so far)

And  TU found this one which sums them all very well.

And this one features Tyler Oakley, a famous YouTuber who interns for The Trevor Project.  Clips from this video even appeared on the national evening news:

Tyler calls on all of us to help out.  In addition to The Trevor Project and Matthew Shepard Foundation listed above, There are plenty of  other resources to help us do that:

GLAD - Gay and Lesbian Ally organization

GLAAD - Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation

GSA - Gay and Straight Alliance organization

GLSEN - Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network

PFLAG - Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays

HRC – Human Rights Campaign

Please visit the HRC site and sign the petition to end bullying in schools

Also, you can help by staying informed:  Here are some great ways to do that:

It may seem like there have been an unusually high number of suicides lately.  The beginning of the school year does cause additional stress and does cause a peak in the cases.  However, sadly, this really is nothing new.  Historically the number of suicides among gay youth has always been hugely disproportionately gay males.  The difference now is that awareness, knowledge, and attention to the cause has greatly improved.   At least acknowledging the problem is the first step toward resolving the problem.

Naelany wrote a story in response to the latest suicides, called Did No One See The Writing On The Wall? If you know of any other stories that deal with bullying and/or suicide among LGBTQ youth, please share them with us in the comments.

The next step is up to you.

Several potential actions have been presented to you.  Please pick at least one.  I will sign the HRC petition, donate to The Trevor Project, and will work with local schools to see how I can get this information to the youth of the community.  I will stay in touch by reading the blogs so when I know things like important legislation is underway and will contact my legislators.   I just read that Senator Al Franken is a fierce advocate so I hope to see action there very soon.

What will you do?  I challenge everyone who reads this to pick at least on action.  Please leave a comment and let us know which one(s).  Thank-you!!!

PS.  Next Monday October 11 is National Coming Out Day.  I hope to write more on the topic of ‘coming out’ someday.  In the meantime, check out:   http://www.hrc.org/ncod/

Tuesday's Best 7-13-2010

Good morning ladies and gents! Hope everyone is having a fabulous day! Aradi and I are back this week with a lighter offering than you might be used to (especially from me, since we all know I love - and dole out - angsty stories). With everything that's going on though, we thought it might be nice to bring out a smile or even a giggle today. Especially because today happens to be the birthday of one of our own lovely ladies - Captain Jezebel. More on that in the end note. For now, let's see what's in store for you today, shall we?

~*~*~*~*~*~

I see a lot of Slash that I'd call fluffy, or light, or even humorous, but I don't see a lot of Slash that I'd label "comedy."  Luckily I saw some glowing references to Said and Done by ICMezzo, and I was on it faster than you can say "alt-tab."  One vampire, two boys falling in love, and a triple shot of comedy is a recipe for success.

Edward is the lonely, virginal vamp we've come to expect, only here he's in grad school with human classmate Jasper.  He's also delightfully inept at the most simple interactions with humans and, initially anyway, blissfully unaware of both his and Jasper's sexual orientations.

"So Edward, is it that you don't know that I'm gay, or you don't care that I'm gay?" he asked.

"You're gay?" I replied. I didn't care, but he'd never mentioned it.

"Well, I guess that answers that," he sighed. "Wait. Do you think a straight man would wear this shirt?"

"I suppose not. But whatever you are is fine with me. Really." Who was I to be judgmental? I wasn't even human.

The boys have made slow, steady progress over the course of the current 13 chapters.  Edward naturally has a million reasons why they shouldn't even be friends, nevermind anything more than that.  Fortunately, being anywhere near Jasper seems to make Edward forget all about why he shouldn't be with Jasper.  Jasper is persistent, and is as perceptive as Edward is clueless.  Jasper seems to know who he is and what he wants, and he's sweetly patient about waiting for Edward to wake up to the idea that they want the same things.

"The same things" make for great laughs.  Edward is learning from scratch, and luckily all of the Cullens are as eager as Jasper is for him to get with the program.  Esme and Alice are quick to offer help and encouragement.  Poor Carlisle muddles through conversations that no father should have to have with his century-old son.  Emmett rescues Carlisle, and generously schools Edward on the mechanics of boy/boy love (in what is probably the most hysterical exchange of the story so far... but I wont spoiler that part).

Luckily, he seemed as eager as I was glad to leave the subject behind after that. I just wasn't sure I was ready for any of this after all. I mean, everyone always seemed to indicate that sex was so great, but, I could barely think about it and I certainly couldn't imagine Jasper considering such a thing.

Emmett must have read the doubt written across my features. "Trust me, Eddie-boy, he's thought about it."

I looked up. How could he know that? Emmett swatted me on the ass and took off even faster toward the east. "You're the only male who doesn't think about sex constantly. And if you're the way he swings, he's envisioned it many a time, bro."

And thinking about that made me run directly into a large spruce, damaging my second tree in about four hours.

With the encouragement of the Cullens and Jasper, Edward quickly warms up to the idea of this potential relationship with Jasper.  Naturally, Edward's progression from asexual novice to one-half of a happy couple takes a scenic detour through perverted stalkerdom.

And later, when he was deep asleep, I may have sneaked in to watch him, but only for an hour, and always maintaining at least a few centimeters of distance between our bodies, except for that one point when my hair must have brushed his nose, because I barely had time to make it back to the couch before he started sneezing violently.

After that, I stayed glued to the couch like a good vampire, waiting for Jasper to wake. And I swear, I only touched myself once, but his sleepy moan was so perfect, I just couldn't help it.

Really, first love and first sex are both already ripe with potential laughs.  When it's slashy, and there's a vampire involved?  Comedy gold.  I want sooo badly to fast forward to the "significant firsts" since they should be a riot.  In the meantime, ICMezzo keeps us busy with one laughable scenario after another.  If you like your Slash to hurry up and earn its M-rating, this may not be the fic for you.  If you love the crazy, this fic delivers enough laughs to ease the discomfort of the slow build.

~*~*~*~*~*~
SnowWhiteHeart had me hooked to her writing when I first read Falling For The First time (it’s AU of the geekiest variety). She has a great sense of humor, and she’s always letting her geek out. She manages to twist and turn things in a most wonderfully nerdy fashion, without ever missing a beat. So when she tweeted one day that she’d had a little plot bunny about a vampire Edward looking for a Domme, and a Domme Bella who never can seem to hold on to a sub...I just had to read it.

She did not disappoint.

In Sub Plans, Edward is his usual virginal vampiric self - but with a twist. He longs to be dominated. He’s been trying to find someone to fit the bill for years, but everything seems stacked against him. He cannot bleed or be hurt in any way, due to his marble skin. Which also causes many an instrument to break. There’s also the fact that he’s ice cold. The few Dommes that have given him a chance, are too freaked out by him for various  reasons. And yet he keeps looking, hoping...yearning.

Bella is a notorious Domme. Why do I say notorious? Because she’s a Domme with a twist of her own. She wants her subs at her disposal Monday through Thursday only; she gets off not on bondaging or punishing per se, but on roleplay. She demands her subs to provide scenes that challenge her...and none have lived up to her high standards. Their imagination is simply not up to snuff. She’s at an event, interviewing potential subs - again - and is about to give up hope of ever finding the right sub.

Enter Edward. Of course. She puts him to the test by demanding he come up with their first scenario on the spot. She offers five minutes to do so, but Edward being Edward...well, you get the idea.

So, the men who usually make it to this round never make it out. Unoriginal pricks.

Why isn't this guy getting up? I wondered.

"I have one now, if I may," he said politely.

I must be dreaming. "Go on," I said, both anticipating and dreading what was going to come out of his lips next. Please don't be a student-scene…

"I'm a vampire who has endured decades of loneliness. All I want is a woman who I can worship—who will look past all my flaws. I need a fearless Dominatrix who will punish me
 for all my past misdeeds."

This guy was either insane, or a fucking genius. And to be perfectly honest, I don't care.

"Sold," I said. "I like that kind of originality, and seriously, you're going to need it with me." I stood up and offered him my card so we could make arrangements. He rose with me, took my card, and looked me in the eyes.

I almost fell over.

This story is BDSM-lite, so if that kind of story isn’t your usual thing, give this a try anyway. The humor and characterization of Edward and Bella are well worth it.

We hope that you've enjoyed these stories, and that you've left the authors some lovin'. We'll be back with more goodies next week. In the meantime though, take a gander at the entries for the Slash/Backslash contest that's going on again. Or better yet, enter the contest yourself! We all could use some more boy-lovin', and I just know there's a good slash story hiding among you somewhere.

Okay. So as I mentioned in the note at the beginning, today is Captain Jezebel's birthday. SorceressCirce and I both wrote her a little somethin', somethin' for the occasion. Check out Parley, by SorceressCirce, and A Whole Latte Lovin' by naelany.

Happy birthday, Jezzie!!! *mwah!*
