Whitlock's Girl's Pick of the Week...

Brand New Start
by Darkira
When an event rider and his horse go through a serious trauma, a "horse whisperer" is needed to try and get the horse back on track. But is the rider beyond any help? How about the whisperer himself? AU/AH/M/Slash/Jasper&Edward M for future lemons.
I just started this fic and I'm loving it. As an avid horse lover and a former eventer, I know the perils that Edward and Calla put themselves in for their sport and I have seen and been involved in similar accidents, though definitely nothing quite this severe. I also know how connected a horse and rider can become and the fact that these two are so intrinsically linked doesn't surprise me in the least.

The Horse Whisperer
is one of my favorite movies and I love the twist that Darkira has made on the movie and the Twilight boys. I can't wait to get completely caught up. I suggest you run and not walk to read this amazingly beautiful fic. You won't be sorry.

Check out Darkira's blog for Brand New Start and also her Outtakes.

FYI~For those of you with a better memory than me, YES, this story was rec'd by Nae about 2.5 months ago and it wasn't tagged and I didn't realize it had been rec'd cause it was during my involuntary internet hiatus. (My laptop had died!) Anyway, the story is so good, that one rec just wouldn't do. LOL! So, if you didn't read it the first time, I hope you'll give it a shot this time.

Naelany's Pick of the Week...

You know how for some people, their first time truly is one to remember because it is so sweet and tender and just everything a first should be?

Well, First by OnTheTurningAway is just that. It's her first fanfic, her first slash story and she tells of Edward and Jasper's first times. In everything. You truly get the feeling from Edward that he is loved and cherished, and the love he feels for Jasper is almost tangible. These boys have known each other for a long time, and are best friends before anything else.

Here's a little snippet to show you the love that's there (and I'm not talkin' about the sexual kind. If you want to get to that, you'll have to read).

Jasper and I were in high school, relying on and supporting each other as we tried to find our way in such an intimidating new setting. Having Jasper by my side made the transition much easier than I expected and I eventually settled into a routine, even managing to make a few new friends. Months passed and things went on as usual until my world came crashing down around me with the sudden passing of my mother.

Jasper was there for me then, as he had been so many times before, doing what no one else could. He soothed me. He sat with me in silence and held my hand. When even that became more than I could bear, he put his arm around me, pulling me close, as I rested my head on his shoulder. Jasper understood without a word that I wasn’t ready to talk, that I didn’t really have anything to say. I closed myself off to everyone but him. He stayed at my house night after night, without question. It was clear to everyone that I wouldn’t make it through this okay without Jasper, that I needed him.

Weeks later, when anger bubbled up through my overwhelming sadness, Jasper brought me to the batting cages, not to play but to throw and hit things, physically expelling my rage until all that was left was an exhausted teenage boy with tear-stained cheeks. When I screamed and sobbed about the unfairness of life, Jasper held me for what seemed like hours, never once shying away from my emotional outbursts, regardless of where they took place. It was almost as if he surrounded me in a protective bubble of friendship and love, absorbing the emotions pouring out of me and replacing them with calmness. Jasper instinctively knew what I needed and he gave it to me without question.

OnTheTurningAway has painted a very believable, very vivid picture of these two boys. I know I'm not alone when I say I would love to see more of them. They are endearing and will grab your heart and hold on tight.

Thanks for poppin' that cherry, OnTheTurningAway!

Tuesday's Best 2-16-2010

So you know what today is. This is the day we bring you the very best we can find. Well, normally we do. Today it's just me, since poor Whitlock's Girl is sick, so send her some love and get well wishes.
I will not leave you hanging though. I have come prepared *snicker*, and you had better do so, too, and grab some towels. Here we go!

~*~*~*~*~*~*~

So I've been told by a few people now to go read The Bronze Prince by TwiBoy. I am so glad I did and I just had to pass this beauty along. It's TwiBoy's first story, and I desperately hope it won't be his last. In fact, I really, really want him to continue this one-shot.

Okay, I suppose I should get my ass in gear and actually tell you about the story, rather than just gushing about wanting more of it. That's what you're here for, after all. Right? Right. So on we go.

The Bronze Prince is - you guessed it - Edward. He isn't an actual Prince though (well, maybe he's someone's Prince Charming, if you will). No. Edward is...well, let's face it. He's a hooker. A sought after one, apparently. But with the job come certain risks, as I'm sure you all can understand.

What you might be surprised by is exactly what risk he takes when accepting a certain john.

I raced through the dark alley, dank with neglect and the smell of rotten, discarded who-knows-what. My blood, laced with adrenaline and abject horror pounded through my veins and my lungs burned with the strain of trying to draw sufficient oxygen to keep me going. Lady Luck, as it were, seemed to be visiting someone else tonight as I tripped over what appeared to be a muffler.

“Shit!” I cursed as I tumbled to the damp cement.

Before I could fucking blink, he was on me, grinning, all gleaming white teeth and curved crimson lips as his inhuman strength pinned me to the ground before bringing his nose to my throat and inhaling my scent. Pulling back, he caressed my cheek with his frigid cold fingers, tracing my cheekbone and jawline as he fixed his horrifically beautiful smile on me.

“I do feel bad, my dear boy for misleading you. I only urged you to run because I love the thrill of the chase, not because I thought you had a fighting chance.” With a disturbing chuckle, he adds, “As if you could outrun me.”

Looking back, I should have known that there was no reason for this man to be on this side of town this late at night. I was a fool for not turning him away, but I just couldn’t help myself.

Ah, but who is Edward's attacker? And what, exactly, is he after? To answer that, you're going to have to read for yourself. Make sure to leave TwiBoy some love...and maybe a little plea to write more ;-) (TwiBoy, told you I wasn't above begging or using peer pressure ;-))

Okay, y'all still with me here? As you are probably aware, this story was rec'ed by Touchstone a couple of weeks ago. There are some drawbacks to being ahead on your recs, it seems ;-) However, I wanted to give you my take on it, too. It's a damn good story, after all.

That said, I didn't want to leave you with just another story that's recently been rec'ed. Lucky for me (and you), our dear TwiBoy wrote another little diddy! And it's suh gooooood! Beautiful Distraction is his entry for the Devirginizing Edward contest (voting going on now), and I have to say he did an amazing job.

Edward is a virgin by choice, not wanting to just go and hook up just for the sake of it. He's newly come out, and he's new to college life. Enter Seth. A gorgeous boy who is well aware of his own sensuality and oozes self-confidence. He knows what he wants, and what he wants is Edward. Will he be able to get our boy though?

I don’t hook up.

There. Decision made. Seth was an insanely attractive guy, but I just couldn’t justify jumping in bed with someone who I'd just met simply because of physical attraction.

I couldn’t bring myself to look at him after I sent off the last text, fearing that he might be angry. For the remainder of the almost lecture, he neither spoke to me, nor sent me any further messages. However, his knee remained pressed against mine, and I couldn’t decide whether it was a good or bad sign.

Whether is is a good or bad sign you will have to go read for yourself. All I can say is that I'm looking forward to seeing more good reads from TwiBoy. Keep 'em coming, cowboy ;-)

Slash Guest Author Rec - MsKathy

Thanks so much to TwiSlash Unveiled for asking me to do a Guest Author Rec. These are the current stories that I'm in love with and drop everything to read an update for.

An Abridged Account by alchemilla mollis

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5164036/1/

http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1845400/alchemilla_mollis

An Abridged Account of the Sexual History of Edward Cullen, as told to Bella Swan. Edward recounts a somewhat disastrous history of encounters with women through the 20th century, as Bella become more and more impatient to have an encounter of their own.

Why I love it:

I love reading about Edward's life as a vamp, even when it's a re-imagined telling of his life pre-Bella. It's not canon, but I like to say that this has a lot of canon-eque traits. Edward has all of his chivalry and reverence for women, and he behaves in the manner I would have expected him to, if this was entirely canon. Also, his citrus with Bella? Off the charts hot. Manhunt? Fucking genius.

An Introduction to Swirl and Daisy by m81170

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5642262/1/An_Introduction_to_Swirl_and_Daisy

http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1824307/m81170

A first kiss, a first dance, a first curse word shared between best friends. This is the tale of a boring young geek and the social pariah who thought the world of him. A tale of growing up. A tale of a Non-Romantic Romance.

Why I love it:

What's not to love about this story? This is the dose of adorable, falling in love fluff I just need in my life. The story is well-written, the characters are full, rich, in-depth and lovable, and the story is just entirely relatable, on several levels. I know it's T-rated, but trust me – this is like sunshine on a snowy day. Wrap yourself up in it and warm your heart.

Exposure by ThePhoenixRiddle

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5393516/1/

http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1902649/ThePhoenixRiddle

When Bella meets Edward and Rosalie, they have an interesting proposition for her. It was supposed to be one night only. What happens when no one wants it to end? ExBxR, ExB, BxR, AU/AH. Part One of The Photographer's Series.

Why I love it:

Okay, I think Rose gets a beating in this fandom, and I love stories that sort of rail against that. This is a super hot story that opens with a threesome between Bella, Edward, and Rose. E&R are BFFs, but Rose is a lesbian. They try to make it work as a threesome, but lose their way. Right now, we're in the thick of some drama and angst, but I am in this for the long haul. I can't wait to see how the authors weave this story back to something resembling a HEA, if that's even where they want to go with it. I have no idea if this will end up as a triad, or if E/B or B/R end up together, but I can't wait to find out.

I Don't Believe in Vampires by lazykate

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5462691/1/

http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1898368/lazykate

During a chance return to Forks, Bella Swan runs into her high school crush only to discover that things were never as they appeared. What has Edward been waiting for all this time? Originally a O/S for Things That Go Bump in the Night, now continued!

Why I love it:

This is such a fun ride. This is a lemony-filled story of vampy Edward and human Bella. I really love what lazykate has done with the twists on canon, and honestly, I can't wait to read more of where she goes. These two are fun and flirty together, and I just adore the whole story.

Somewhere In Between by Kassiah

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5498012/1/Somewhere_In_Between

http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1831850/Kassiah

A tragic accident separated Edward and Bella, forcing them down paths they never envisioned. What happens when they find themselves torn between having what they always wanted and honoring commitments made? AH, Rated M for language & lemons

Why I love it:

Full disclosure: I am Kassiah's beta. I'd love this story even if I wasn't, though. The way Kassiah has woven the storylines together is really brilliant. This is a story that you need to read carefully – there are plot elements and details that are intricate and designed to be intentionally misleading, and I love that. I love how I want to hate James, but not. I love how I feel bad for Bella, but in some ways, I don't. I ache for Edward; he seems to be the most lost and traumatized. I can't wait to see what happens next, since a lot of drama unfolded last chapter.

Southern Comfort by bookbag

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5365345/1/Southern_Comfort

http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1840763/bookbag

Growing up in a Southern life of privilege was never easy for Edward Cullen, his life had always been planned for him. But when he moves back to the old family estate to oversee the restoration, will he find more than he bargained for? AH, OOC, Slash, ExJ

Why I love it:

Okay, I'm not usually a fan of cheating stories, but this is so much more than that. If you're nervous like I was, don't be (yet?). I don't know how bookbag is going to work this all out yet, but so far, there hasn't been any major Bella bashing (my number one pet peeve in slash fics – chick bashing, or making the female protagonists awful caricatures of people in order to excuse the cheating behavior). The story has focused on Edward and his life, the expectations laid at his feet, and how he perceives Jasper. He's getting to know him, getting a sense of his story, and it is unfolding in a fascinating way. Jasper is out and comfortable with himself, but there's obviously more than just that, since he doesn't “do relationships.” So much story and plot here that I am eager to read about and absorb.

Wood by algonquinrt/ohl

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5348404/1/Wood (original one-shot)

http://www.fanfiction.net/s/5701923/1/ (continuation)

http://www.fanfiction.net/u/1821470/ohl

Single father Carlisle moves into a new house and finds more than he bargained for in his new neighbor. Rated M for the usual adult content. Entry for Ninapolitan's DILF contest

Why I love it:

I helped organize Team Rich Wood for the last Fandom Gives Back auction because I just needed more of this story. Carlisle and Edward as DILFs who fall in love (okay, or just fuck, for now)? I love the reality of the two guys together and the not-overly-graphic descriptions of everything. I also love how the side characters are worked in – Alice is Edward's daughter with Bella, conceived with full disclosure that Edward was the gay BFF, and Jasper is Carlisle's son. Bella is a funny, quick-witted character who banters with Edward and basically openly mocks him in front of Carlisle (but in a loving way), and the BJ against the playscape in the backyard in the one-shot? UNF. I laughed hysterically at the beginning of the second chapter, the description of poor Edward upon seeing Carlisle for their date. Can't say I blame him. This should be a fun ride and I'm eager to see how ohl keeps us engaged and interested in where these two go. It can be complicated with kids and exes and such, but I appreciate the extra layer of reality and complication that isn't contrived or a misunderstanding, like most complications in fic seem to be.

Whitlock's Girl brings you

Bittersweet Hurt
by Minerva-one

Minerva-one’s Bittersweet Hurt was written in response to a LiveJournal prompt and explores the reasons why Carlisle chose Edward to share his life.

One of the reasons I chose this story was because, well, to be honest, I have so many stories on alerts and I have no more room to add yet another work-in-progress to that list. I wanted a great story, one that could be read in one sitting, but I felt that we needed to give you something a little meatier than a one-shot. So, I dove through the mess that is fanfiction and this is what I came up with. At twelve chapters, Bittersweet Hurt fits the bill perfectly.

What makes it so great is the way Minerva-one has woven her beautiful passages together to create even more beautiful scenes. One of my favorites is at the very beginning of the story.

Carlisle Cullen walked with a deliberate pace toward the hospital to begin his shift. He was not scheduled for duty tonight but he needed a distraction, on this night most of all. This was the one night of the year his human memories would come unbidden to his mind, and make his heart ache for the life that was taken from him. It was Christmas Eve and he was lonely.

How long had he led this life? He was beginning to lose count; the years were starting to blur together, but every face, every city, and every continent all seemed the same. Yet, each moment he could spend in the vicinity of humans helped to desensitize his nose, giving him some sense of control over the incessant thirst for blood that would always plague him. He chuckled quietly to himself, thinking that he might yet be able to prove to the others that living among humans was not an impossible task. It was a simple issue of mind over matter.

The air settled into a blanket of quiet over the city, heavy with the coming snowstorm. The only sound Carlisle could hear was the near imperceptible crunch of snow under his feet, and a few snippets of caroling now and again.

Turning down one particular street he had not used before, a light piano melody caught his ear - lush and sensual against the still of the night. Carlisle stopped to pinpoint the sound and heard another faint stanza emanating from the house two doors down, and he stepped forward in curiosity. There was a large gathering in the home, as lights burning bright in every room - probably a Christmas feast, he surmised.

The feast he’s stumbled upon is hosted by Edward Masen’s family. The sight and sound of Edward sitting there playing for his family struck a chord within Carlisle; a chord that moves him as nothing has for the last 300 years.

I was very touched by this story, but I must warn you – tissues just might be needed. Enjoy.

And naelany brings you

Have I mentioned how much I love contests? They bring out some of the best stories, and digging through them is definitely a pleasure. Especially when you come across something like Walk In Beauty by einfach_mich, which was written for the Officer & a Gentleman contest.

Einfach_mich gives us a striking story of Edward and Jacob. Edward is the officer assigned to protect Jacob, a Windtalker. While Edward is supposed to be the one protecting Jacob, you find early on that their roles end up reversed when one of their missions goes awry and Edward ends up hurt.

Jacob has given Edward a nickname - Ayid, which he explains:

“It means chest,” he says, pulling his hands back till his thumbs hit his chest. “Actually, it means protection of what is vital to the body.”

But is it just the literal meaning, or could there be something more behind it? For that, you are going to have to read this story for yourself. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I have.

Whitlock's Girl brings you

Looking for some hot guy on guy action? Yes? Well, aren't we all. For me, I found it in Southern Charm by Meikela.

Jasper is a rarity. He's a Chicago cop, has been for the last 5 years and he's openly gay. His partner and brother-in-law is Emmett McCarty whose been married to Jasper's sister, Rosalie for the last year. Story opens and it's their last night on patrol. Come Monday, they will be sporting shiny new gold shields and working on days.

Meanwhile, Edward Cullen pulls into a parking spot behind St. Bernard Hospital. It's his first shift and even though his brother Carlisle is the Chief of Surgery, Edward was still a bit nervous at the thought of starting his new job. A war vet, Edward worked his way through the Navy to earn his MD and he's just returning to Chicago to start anew, excited to be able to just be himself, to quit hiding and be able to admit that he's gay.

Both men are looking for something. Jasper, who's tired of looking for Mr. Right and only finding guys that are into Mr. Right Now; and Edward, who just wants to find himself and enjoy the peace and quiet. Unfortunately, or fortunately – fuck, I'm not sure which I should use - it's one of those situations that fucking sucks, but leads to the one thing you want most. Anyhow, while Edward is sick and tired of treating gun shot wounds, on this night he has to take care of one of Chicago's Finest.

Is it Jasper or Emmett? Is Rosalie going to get the call about her husband or her brother. Well, I'm not going to tell you, that would just ruin it. GO READ THE STORY! It's most definitely worth the time and effort. Leave Meikela some love and let me know what you think. I love to know if y'all agree with my opinions on the stories I rec.

Welcome to the famile, Meikela!

And naelany brings you

Well, here I am again, bringing another story to you. I have to admit, I've been waffling a little over this one. I love the story (like, a lot), but the subject matter is one of those that come with strong feelings and opinions attached to it. Well, in real life situations at least (we all know this is fanfic though, and sometimes different rules seem to apply).

So which story am I talking about? It's Project Seduce Mr Whitlock by rmhale. Jasper Whitlock is a new teacher at Forks High. Edward Cullen is a student in his senior year. When Mr Whitlock walks into his last class of the day - Edward's history class - he catches the eye of one Mr Cullen. Jasper, in turn, is basically smitten at the mere sight of him. Oh, and did I happen to mention that our Edward is just 17?

Right, now you see why I said this subject comes with strong feelings and emotions attached. While what happens in the story is not something I ordinarily would condone, I am nevertheless intrigued by it. In part because Edward is very self-aware, and while he is only 17 years old, he isn't that far away from being a legal adult. If given time, there would be no issue for any relationship between them, other than the odd joke of Jasper robbing the cradle (hey, I can't say much against that, since I'm guilty of that one myself ;-)).

But things are never quite that simple, are they? And that's actually the part that has me intrigued. We get to follow along on their journey. Believe me when I say that they have plenty of stumbling blocks along the way. Some stemming from the fact they are teacher/student. Some from the age difference between them. And some because while Edward is still a virgin, Jasper has just come out of a bad relationship. Can we say a recipe rife with angst?

So far, rmhale has handled things really well, and given a good feel for both characters, and I trust that she will continue to do so. There are some errors in the story, but none that really detract from the telling of it. I'm along for the ride, anyway. Hopefully you will be, too.
