When Fiction Comes To Life

After lovelypenguin's post today on Gay Pride, Captain Jezebel and I got to talking about her daughter attending New York Gay Pride. We thought, what better way to link fiction with life than to have one of our very own share their experience?

So I asked if the Captain would mind writing something, and with her and her daughter's okay, here's what they had to say:

~*~*~*~*~*~

Yes by now you all know that I am an avid slash reader, and yes much of it has to do with the entertainment factor, but there are other reasons why I find myself reading these wonderful stories. In my family we like to promote tolerance for all races, religions, creeds and sexual orientations. We do not judge a person by who they are, who they worship, or who they love; I was raised this way, and I have tried to instill this in my child as well. So imagine how proud (that being the key word) I was to find out that my daughter volunteered to help her friend, whose mom works with a community health center that promotes safe sex during the New York City Pride Parade.

My 16 year old daughter affectionately known as 'The Demon Seed' around my house and the Fandom, proudly marched, blowing her whistle, dancing to the music, wearing her rainbow feather boa, and tossing condoms to the crowd shouting 'Don't be silly, wrap your willy.' Now this may shock some, but I could not have been prouder.

When asked how she felt about the entire experience she answered, and I quote: 'I have never felt that much love and acceptance among such a large group of people. It didn't matter if we were strangers, the love was evident, and it being totally cool to hold hands with someone you never met was proof of that. I felt that the parade was a place for everyone to feel accepted even if you weren't same sex oriented, if you were just a supporter, or needed to feel acceptance in your life for other reasons you were welcome with open arms.'

Now can you see why I am such a PROUD momma?

They had a couple of picture they wanted to share with you, so here they are:

OK the first pic is her on the left with her friend at the 10 min mark of the countdown to the parade.

The second is the group marching in back of hers, they were prepping that unity flag to be attached to their float.

The third is the demon seed with the Metro Card Pharoh. He made is entire outfit out of old Metrocards.
(For non NY'ers Metrocards are what gets us on the subways and buses of NYC. $2.25 and you can go anywhere in the city well $4.50 if you are making a round trip)

For more pictures, and some info on the organization that Demon Seed helped with during Gay Pride, check out their Facebook. You don't have to be a member of Facebook to see the pictures.

So what about you? Did you join any of the parades? Want to share? Leave us a comment if you do, we'd love to hear about it.

This was a lovely post! A few years back, my group of mama friends and I all marched in a Pride parade with our kiddos. Some of us mamas are bisexual but we had just as many straight moms marching with us in support and it was a fantastic experience. There were about 7 moms and at least 10 kids under the age of 8 at the time. I wish I had pictures of us all from that day. :)
